About the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund (ISF)
On June 5, 2009, the Federal and Provincial governments announced a joint investment of $1.85 billion for infrastructure projects to help create jobs and stimulate the economy. For municipal projects, the Federal and Provincial governments will each contribute up to one-third of eligible costs, with municipalities contributing one-third. Infrastructure projects focus mainly on the rehabilitation of existing assets such as water, wastewater, public transit, highways, roads, culture, parks, and trails. Mississauga’s approved 132 ISF projects must be completed by March 31, 2011 to be eligible for funding.
About Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC)
On June 26, 2009 the Federal and Provincial governments announced an investment of more than $380 million for recreational infrastructure projects over a two-year period. Each level of government is contributing up to one-third of a project’s eligible cost up to a maximum of $1 million each, per project, with recipients providing the balance. Mississauga received funding for six outdoor pools. Construction will begin in March 2010 and must be materially completed by March 31, 2011 to be eligible for funding.
Ward 11 ISF and RInC Projects
Park Pathway Paving and Lighting
Lighted pathways within Mississauga’s parks system are regularly used by pedestrians, cyclists, and rollerbladers. These pathways also serve as pedestrian linkages connecting schools, public facilities, natural areas, institutions, and shopping centres to transportation routes. Light standards along the City’s parks and trails are past their serviceable life, and some surfaces of pathways are deteriorating and will require repair or complete replacement.
Rehabilitation of the City’s park pathways and lighting is being funded through Infrastructure Stimulus Fund (ISF) funding andwill include replacing electrical lighting infrastructure, including underground wiring and conduit, poles, ballasts, bulb fixtures, etc. High efficiency bulbs and ballasts with code compliant supply systems will reduce energy consumption. Rehabilitation of park pathways will involve reconstruction of pathway drainage and asphalt surface. The refurbished lighted pathways will provide safe park access and encourage participation in leisure and recreation activities in Mississauga’s parks.
Ward 11 park pathway and lighting projects include:
- Bonnie Brae Park ($44,000 budget)
- Turney Woods Park ($145,300 budget)
- Meadow Green Park ($188,700 budget)
- Pinecliff Park ($43,000 budget)
- Glendenning Park ($119,200 budget)
Construction will begin in March 2010 (except for Turney Woods, which will begin in December 2009) and will be completed in September 2010.
Road Rehabilitation
The City’s road rehabilitation projects will allow for the rehabilitation of roadways at an optimum point in their life cycle, so as to ensure that the life of the road will be extended without requiring extensive road reconstruction. Future maintenance and capital costs will also be reduced as a result of these rehabilitation projects. Rehabilitation of the City’s roadways is being funded through Infrastructure Stimulus Fund (ISF) funding.
Ward 11 road rehabilitation projects include:
- Creditview Road (from Britannia Road to Old Creditview Road)- $1,462,500 budget
- Eglinton Avenue West (from Erin Mills Parkway to Mississauga Road)- $2,106,000 budget
Construction will begin in August 2009 and will be completed in June 2010.
Sidewalk Replacement
New sections of sidewalks are required to meet provincial guidelines for a fully accessible transit network. Sidewalk replacement projects will also result in a fully accessible sidewalk network to all transit stops and ensure pedestrian safety and accessibility for all transit users. Replacement of the City’s sidewalks is being funded through Infrastructure Stimulus Fund (ISF) funding.
Ward 11 sidewalk replacement projects include:
- Derry Road sidewalk (from McLaughlin Road to Hurontario Street)- $177,580 budget
Construction will begin in August 2009 and will be completed in March 2010.
Streetsville Pool
Mississauga ’s outdoor pools range in age from 33 to 56 years old. Despite vigorous maintenance programs, the City’s outdoor pools have reached a stage of lifecycle where significant capital repair and rehabilitation are required. Necessary pool tank repairs, deck rehabilitation, and building renovation will significantly contribute to increasing the lifespan of Mississauga’s outdoor pools.
The Streetsville Pool rehabilitation project has a budget of approximately $3 million and is being funded through Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) funding. Rehabilitation of Streetsville Pool will include pool building replacement and repairs to the pool tank. The energy-efficient design and building systems that will be utilized will greatly reduce energy consumption and significantly improve water usage.
Other useful amenities that will be provided at Streetsville Pool include a barrier-free family change room with on-deck showers, male and female change rooms, a shaded area for patrons, a new sheltered outdoor learning space, and new landscaped areas around the facility.
Construction at Streetsville Pool will begin in April 2010 and will be completed in March 2011. The pool will re-open to the public in summer 2011.
